Busy Tuesday for the WFD
Tuesday, July 20, 2010
-
Tuesday has proven to be a busy day for the members of the WFD who have logged five runs thus far.

The morning started at 8:30am with an activated fire alarm at the Christian Health Care Center.   Engine #232 (OIC BC Hendrickson), Engine #233 (OIC LT. Forsyth), Engine #231 and DC Rose #239 all responded into the scene.   Upon arrival, BC Hendrickson reported that the alarm was activated in error due to a malfunction in the system

While remaining units were still enroute to the call above, Wyckoff PD were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with a possible entrapment on Grandview Avenue.   DC Rose requested an additiional alarm be dispatched for Rescue #242 and the remainder of the Wyckoff units to be assigned to the Grandview Avenue incident.   Upon arrival, DC Rose reported two vehicles involved with one vehicle off the roadway into a tree lined area with a female driver who was unable to exit the vehicle.

Engine #235, Engine #233, Rescue #242, Rescue #243 and Engine #232 all responded into the Grandview Avenue accident.  Upon arrival, crews worked to secure the vehicles batteries and assess the patient condition. The crew from Rescue #242 went to work utlizing a winch to pull the vehicle out of the wooded area to gain better access to the vehicle and patient.  Once the vehicle was moved, the patient was able to be removed from the vehicle and turned over to BLS.

At approximately 10:30am, Wyckoff Police received a report of a gas meter leaking outside of a residence on Harvest Court.  Engine #231 (OIC BC Vanderplaat), Engine #232 (OIC BC Hendrickson, Tower Ladder #241 (OIC FF. Alvarez), Engine #233 (OIC Lt. Forsyth) and DC Rose #239 all responded into the scene.   Upon the arrival of Engine #231, BC Vanderplaat reported that there was a broken gas line coming out of the meter on the exterior of the residence.  Crews were able to shut the gas off to the residence and and turned the incident over to PSE&g. All crews returned to service a short time later.

At 3:10pm, the Oakland Fire Department requested Tower Ladder #241 respond mutual aid into their town for an activated fire alarm at Indian Hills High School.  Tower Ladder #241 (OIC FF. Ciampo) and DC Rose #239 both reponded.   Wyckoff units were released upon arrival since the activation was found to be a malfunction by Oakland Crews.

What will the rest of the day bring??

Wyckoff FD Exempts Memorial Dedication
Monday, June 14, 2010
-

The Wyckoff Fire Department would like to congratulate Andrew Michael Bell on his attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations also to his parents, Colin, member of Company No. 1 and his wife, Sue Bell.

Andrew began his scouting career as a Tiger in Wyckoff Pack 198 in 2000. He progressed through the ranks and earned the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest honor. He joined Troop 89 in 2005, and worked diligently to complete all the requirements to attain the rank of Eagle Scout.

He chose to rebuild the Wyckoff Fire Department Memorial in front of Company No. 1, which had been damaged in a storm, for his Eagle project. He contacted Fire Chief Dave Murphy about his plan and Dave suggested that he contact Scott Fisher, Captain of Company No. 1, and Road Department Superintendent, as well as Ex-chief Nick Ciampo to assist him with his project.  He demolished the existing monument with the help of Scott, Nick, other scouts in his troop, and members of the Wyckoff Road Department.

He raised the funds to complete the new and larger monument which stands in front of Fire Company No. 1. He can be very proud of his achievement each time he passes the site. The Wyckoff Fire Department wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Andrew for such an outstanding job in replacing our existing monument.

Not Your Typical Monday
Tuesday, May 11, 2010
-
At 11:34 hours Monday Morning, a Drury Lane homeowner contacted the police desk reporting a smoke condition in her residence with the smoke alarms sounding.  Wyckoff Police and fire departments were immediately dispatched.

Upon the arrival of the first Wyckoff Police Officer, the officer was reporting heavy smoke in the area.  Chief Murphy #230 signed into service and received the update.  Upon confirmation of a confirmed smoke condition in the residence and a possible garage fire, Chief Murphy requested a second alarm assignment into the Township.

Engine #231, Tower Ladder #241, Engine #232, Engine #233 and Rescue #242 all signed into service shortly after dispatch.  Engine #231 came into the scene and established a water supply.  By this point, Chief Murphy reported an active garage fire with extension into the floor above.  Interior crews stretched handlines into the structure to attack the main body of fire.  Upon the arrival of Tower Ladder #241, truck crews immediately went to the roof creating a vent for the interior attack crews.

2nd alarm units arrived on scene and were quickly put to work assisting the Wyckoff Crews with the attack and overhaul.   The fire was placed under control within 35 minutes of dispatch.

Mutual aid companies operating at the scene included Waldwick, Ramsey, Franklin Lakes, Hohokus, Oakland, Hawthorne, Allendale and Mahwah.

Great job by everyone involved for making a quick stop!

Local Family Visits WFD Members for Dinner
Friday, May 7, 2010
-
Last evening a local family came to Co #1 to provide dinner for a group of Wyckoff Fire Department Members and spend time with the firefighters to learn about what we do.   The visit was part of a community service project that two six year old girls, Emily and Elizabeth have embarked on.   As part of their community service project, Emily and Elizabeth came to firehouse to provide the firefighters with dinner as a sign of thanks for the work that volunteer firefighters perform. In addition, Emily will be running a lemonade stand in her neighborhood to raise funds for a Wyckoff Family that recently suffered a loss at their home due to a fire.

On behalf of the Wyckoff Fire Department we would like to extend a thank you to Emily, Elizabeth and mom for their very generous gesture and their kindness.
